Benetech Foundation Features Jack Chen: From Bookshare Member to Published Author

Benetech Foundation, dedicated to creating equal access to learning materials for people with disabilities, recently featured Jack Chen in a compelling interview about his journey from struggling reader to published author. The foundation's CEO Ayan Kishore sat down with Jack to explore how Benetech's Bookshare platform became the catalyst for his groundbreaking research and upcoming novel.

After losing his sight completely at 16 due to surgical complications, Jack faced what he describes as having "a bucket of ice poured into the deepest parts of his soul." Despite low Braille proficiency and limited access to reading materials during college, Jack's discovery of Bookshare over a decade ago transformed his relationship with books. "Bookshare's collection was current and up to date, as well as very easy to use. Thanks to Bookshare, I have access to all the books I wanted to read but did not have access to before," Jack explains.

This accessibility breakthrough enabled Jack's ambitious 10-year research project studying 50 extraordinary achievers with disabilities. Using Bookshare's Word document downloads and annotation features, Jack built a comprehensive database analyzing the common success factors among high achievers facing adversity. His upcoming book promises to reveal these insights to both academic and general audiences, proving his philosophy: "You must embrace your adversity, if you wish to achieve success."
